When the power is turned off, the data is lost

December 16, 2024

People do not lose data when they wake up from sleep. Of course, they may distort or forget, but the basic data remains in a learned state.

However, if a computer is not connected to the power, all data disappears. Therefore, special storage devices such as NAND flash or ROM are used to store important data.

However, controlling power within the SOC means removing the power of SRAM or flip flops during calculations.
From now on, we will discuss power control using a technology called power gating.
Power gating is a technology that controls power by turning off the power of a desired part within the SOC system to reduce power consumption.

Power gating can reduce power consumption, but because the power is turned off, the data that I worked hard to calculate is lost. Then, since the computer does not have the previously calculated data, new calculations based on the previous data cannot start.

If only the data of the calculation area is lost, only the information of the relevant task is lost and the calculation ends to the extent of stopping, but if the data of the control system, which is the core element that allows the computer to operate ‘as a computer’, is lost, the computer itself cannot operate.
That is why there are actually few opportunities for power gating. It can be turned off only when the function is not used at all.

For example, most display systems update the image at 60 frames per second, so they operate at 60fps (Frame Per Second), which means that the time each frame stays on the screen is 1/60 second = 16.6ms. That means the screen refresh cycle is 16.6ms.
However, today’s computing is so great that we can finish all the work that needs to be done every 16.6ms in 4~5ms. Then, we can rest for 11~12ms, and of course, if we power gate during the rest period, we can reduce power consumption.

However, if we do power gating in one frame like this, we cannot start the next frame properly.
This is because the power supply is cut off through power gating, and all the data calculated in the previous frame is gone, so we cannot start a new calculation based on the previous data. We have to start everything again.

Therefore, it is difficult to apply the technology called power gating to dynamically turn off the power of unnecessary hardware blocks due to data loss. Without additional technology, power gating can only be done when the display function is not used.
