The field of robotics is hot these days. Following AI, the robotics industry is emerging as the next generation leader.
We need to consider why robotics is booming and where it is needed.
While AI assists human intelligence, robotics assists human labor.
Robots can only be applied in sectors where robots are cheaper than human labor.
Robots cannot replace labor in ultra-low-wage jobs or underdeveloped countries.
This is because labor costs are much lower than robots, and they are versatile.
If they replace labor without ever being cheap, the countries or industries where they can be applied may be limited.
Ultimately, there is only one niche that robots are penetrating: countries with high labor costs and high value-added manufacturing.
Let us examine countries from this perspective.
I believe that the introduction of robots is difficult in developed nations.
Robots are not a technology that revitalizes uncompetitive industries, but rather one that enhances the productivity of already competitive industries.
I believe that if an industry’s competitiveness is low, it is difficult to overcome this through the introduction of robots.
This is because robots cannot create something out of nothing; this is always the responsibility of humans.
This is the same reason why manufacturing struggles in developed nations, despite an abundance of all kinds of robots and automation facilities.
It is difficult for robots to restore a collapsed industry.
I anticipate that even with the emergence of humanoid robots, this gap will not be bridged.
In developing or low-wage countries, manufacturing is feasible, but the introduction of robots is difficult.
Since wages are much lower than the labor costs of robots, there is no incentive to introduce robots that primarily perform fixed tasks.
Humans are much cheaper and perform the work better.
Germany, Korea, and Japan are countries with high manufacturing competitiveness and high labor costs.
Because all three countries share the commonality of high wages, the conditions for robots to be economically viable are met, and they are actually the countries most advanced in robot adoption.
However, Korea is a little different.
While Germany and Japan’s mainstays are mature industries such as automobiles, machinery, and precision machinery, Korea possesses numerous industries that are still growing, including semiconductors, defense, shipbuilding, and automobiles.
In mature industries, robots merely streamline existing processes;
however, in growing industries, their effects are multiplied when coupled with capacity expansion.
In the semiconductor manufacturing process, Korea is already experiencing productivity improvements through the introduction of robots.
In this scenario, the adoption of robots operates not by taking away human jobs, but by pushing production into areas that are difficult for human labor to reach.
As a result, I believe there is a high probability that the manufacturing sector will experience another surge.
Perhaps the reason Jensen Huang visited Korea was precisely because he foresaw this potential?
