I like games, so I sometimes compare social phenomena to games. Role Playing Game (RPG) games are very similar to life, so I think my thoughts can flow without much of a stretch when I compare them.
After starting a business, many people around me are curious about starting a business, so I’d like to talk about it.
Starting a business and working at a company are extremely different.
As someone who has played both, I would describe working life as a Japanese RPG game (JRPG) and starting a business as a Western RPG game (WRPG).
The characteristic of JRPGs is that there is a set route.
If you go along the set path step by step, you can level up, defeat bosses, and obtain items. There may be a faster way, but the big picture is basically set.
Starting as an employee and going to assistant manager, manager, and director is almost set.
There is not much freedom, but if you can level up to go along the set path, you can fully enjoy the story.
On the other hand, the characteristic of WRPGs is that there is no set route.
You can go to the final boss at level 1, or you can get to level 100 and return to the starting town. Since there is no set path, you can go to the final boss as soon as you have the ability. If you look at Zelda speedruns that can be completed in under an hour, there are a ton of shortcuts.
You have to find your own way to level up and get items. Nothing is set in stone. The choices are entirely yours.
Although senior entrepreneurs can show you the way, the games back then and the games I play are very different.
Because the degree of freedom is so high, it’s so overwhelming.
However, if you can enjoy this overwhelming feeling, you can have fun that is incomparable to taking a set path.
If you’ve decided to start a business, thinking about what kind of games you like might be one way to do it.
The similarity between corporate life and starting a business is that you are given almost only one challenge. This is almost the same in life. You can’t go back to the past. However, another thing they have in common is that you don’t die even if you don’t clear one challenge. Even if you don’t complete a challenge, you don’t die, so I think there is another opportunity for another challenge.
Even if you can’t do well at this company, you can do well at another company,
and even if you fail at starting a business once, I think there are second and third opportunities to start a business.
Since the fun points are different, I personally enjoy both JRPGs and WRPGs very much. Whether it’s company life or starting a business, if you can figure out the fun points, I think you can enjoy either one.
