Even in the automotive industry which is one of the most highly automated manufacturing fields, only about a dozen countries in the world can mass-produce cars.
The entry barrier is that high because a single vehicle requires tens of thousands of parts to be assembled and welded across thousands of steps. 🚗🏭
Elon Musk entered this highly mature industry much later than others, yet rewrote the rules of the game by doing something everyone could imagine but no one dared to attempt. 🎯
One of them is Giga Casting, a method of printing out a part of the car body in one piece using a super-large press called Giga Press.
This allowed Tesla to improve the core values of a vehicle, including safety and consistent quality, while also reducing production time and dramatically lowering manufacturing complexity.
It’s a striking example of how innovation rooted in “the essence” can transform an entire industry. 😲
Semiconductor design is no less complex than automotive manufacturing. And in this field too, there is an innovation that deals directly with the essence of the problem.
